Portraits of 11 exceptional Swiss sailors, a Swiss book with a taste of salt

Talking about Switzerland as a maritime homeland always makes you smile. Yet exceptional sailors have come from these mountains. A book puts them in the spotlight: Swiss at sea.

Suisses en mer is the book that brings together the Swiss who have shone in sailing races. There are not many of them (the book lists 11), but they have nevertheless left their mark on the history of racing, mainly at sea. If I tell you names like Fehlman, Stamm, Bourgnon or Roura, does it speak to you?

For yes, those sailors whose names resonate in our heads as extraordinary sailors are all Swiss. Solo or with a crew, sailors or project leaders, they are all great sailors who have left their mark on ocean racing.

The book that portrays 11 of them tells us about their origins, their glory days in the race and their nautical stories. Written by a trio of journalists (Swiss of course!) and very nicely illustrated with photos by Jean-Guy Python (also Swiss...), this book takes us behind these men (and women) who have left their mark on Swiss nautical history.

The texts are finely chiselled and very pleasant to read. For each of the sailors, a portrait using the anecdote as an entry point, followed by a Sports Chronology, completes the skipper's story.

Everyone will find known facts and gestures, as well as more confidential anecdotes which demonstrate the quality of these sailors who came down from the mountains to reach the open sea.
