Test / Positioning, Architecture and Design of the Dehler 38 SQ, a revisited version

This autumn, Dehler Yachts presented a new version of its Dehler 38, launched in 2013, which is more performance-oriented. We tried this first model dressed in a beautiful red finery in the bay of Cannes

A Successful Transition

Since its takeover by the Hanse Yachts Group in 2009 and the move of production to the Greifswald fiefdom in 2012, the Westphalian shipyard has evolved well and its range of 29 to 46-foot models has kept its own identity of robust and well-finished racing-cruising. It can also be said that the first model designed and built on the Hanseatic coast, the 38, without chine or ultra-wide stern, brought an extra touch of elegance due to the style of the architects, Judel/Vrolijk & Co, which benefited the rest of the range later on.

Optimized performance

This new model received its SQ particle (which appeared in 1998 on the 39) to distinguish its orientation on speed and quality (Speed & Quality). Performance has always been the yard's first claim and to serve this beautiful hull as well as possible, a delphiniere, acting as a keel davit, is installed as standard to move the tack of the downwind sails, asymmetrical, code 0 or gennaker and make them more efficient. In the same spirit, the deck layout has been improved with better ergonomics at the manoeuvring stations. A rail across the entire width of the cockpit is available for fine-tuning the mainsail carriage, which can now have an optional horn. A set of backstays/backstays can also be used to adjust the mainsail leech, but as they are not essential for mast handling, they can be retracted at the chainplate points in medium time.

Even more quality

The 38 had already made the ground clear at the time with a host of ergonomic and qualitative details, and the presence of Karl Dehler, one of the very inventive sons, at the Hanse yard was no stranger to this. For this new version, the comfort in use slider has been pushed further. Enlargement of the hull portholes, addition of portholes/deckhouse sides and roof. The luminosity and interior ventilation are greatly improved. The larger aft platform has a reinforced lifting system and a recessed swim ladder with wide steps for easier access to the water. This first model also benefits from a beautiful red hull paint and decor that stands out.

Manufacturing beyond suspicion

This is another top priority for the brand. The infused sandwich hull construction uses good materials (vinylester resin and balsa) and a very rigorous implementation. Just look carefully at some of the gelcoat junctions or lift the floors to see this.
