Test / Pricing and alternatives for the Amel 50, a realistic fare

© JS Evrard

The Amel 50 is a very well built family cruising sloop. The fine-tuning of its equipment and its new modern look make it a great success, which is confirmed by the shipyard's order book

A reasonable standard rate

The starting price of the Amel 50 is set at 830,000 euros excluding VAT, which is cheap for a small series yacht with an exemplary finish. No creaking, everything works very well and on top of that her lines and her rejuvenated interior are very elegant. Aesthetics is the point that has progressed the most on this model. At this price, the boat is ready to cast off in a minimalist configuration, but ready to sail, which is rare enough to point out. However, you don't buy an Amel to winch, do the point with the sextant and wash the dishes by hand.

Navigation and comfort options

The model we tried was priced at 970,000 euros excluding VAT and is a very complete boat for a long-distance cruise. Self-steering staysail, downwind sails, air conditioning, ambient lighting, electric davits, generator, household appliances, nothing is missing to go around the world. The greatest satisfaction is to know that everything has been tested and checked to avoid as much as possible the breakdowns that always happen at the wrong time.

What about the competition?

In this category of large cruising yachts with a small series central cockpit, with flawless construction and impeccable finishes, only old accustomed to excellent exercise. But the Amel is giving them a hard time with its new 50, which is prompting some to develop new models. This is the case of Hallberg-Rassy with a 50 in preparation that should be presented in Düsseldorf in January 2020. Double helm and double rudder, lots of storage space and Swedish quality as a bonus. Her national alter ego, Najad, is offering her 50 CC Next Generation. Very close to the Hallberg Rassy in philosophy, she remains on a monosafran concept and her silhouette is really very elegant. The Contest 50 CS has been on the ranks of these fully automated luxury cruisers since 2007, but its design is a little dated and it shows. The price of all these yachts is in the region of one million euros excluding VAT and is similar to that of the Amel 50. Only Hallberg-Rassy offers a hard-top like the Amel as an option and in our opinion the most serious competitor.
