Blackbeard, a true pirate story told in comics by Jean-Yves Delitte

Jean-Yves Delitte is a hell of a cartoonist. When his stories take liberties with history, he tells us with delight the story of the pirate Blackbeard, the famous Blackbeard who lived at the end of the 17th century.

After Redbeard that's the story of Blackbeard. But if the first one is totally invented, the second one is built on the legend of a Blackbeard pirate who really existed. This British pirate who lived between 1680 and 1718 sailed along the Caribbean coast. His real name: Edward Teach.

In this volume 1 of Black Beard, Jean-Yves Delitte tells the story of this pirate when he left the Caribbean to head north to the state of Carolina. A hypothetical treasure described in a notebook puts him on this road.

Jean-Yves Delitte is a navy painter. Specialized in the drawings of 18th century ships, he has written numerous works, the most recent of which are the accounts of the great naval battles. We also enjoyed working with Jean-Benoit Héron on the book "Aboard the frigates" . But he's a drawer with a love of detail, and also a good storyteller. And while relying on historical facts, he takes pleasure in imagining scenes and describing feelings.

A dark atmosphere, Jean-Yves Delitte starts his story in a London prison. He gets a prisoner to talk, who says he was close to the famous pirate. It is this story that leads us in the wake of the bloodthirsty sailor. The drawings are superb. The atmosphere is well rendered. The details of navigation and armament of the sailing ships are astonishing.

We get caught up in the game, even if sometimes the story is a bit jerky, following the life of this legendary pirate. This man who seems immortal (the rest of his life will confirm that he is not) is gifted with an intelligence that avoids many pitfalls. Jean-Yves Delitte brings him back to the forefront for our greatest pleasure.
