Nemesis One, the sailing catamaran of the future

Nemesis One is the luxury catamaran project carried by VPLP, a 101 m sailing yacht that should sail at more than 50 knots. A crazy project that doesn't seem so crazy given the progress of current technologies

What if we let the architects imagine the sailboat of the future. I'm not sure how far away it would be from the Nemesis One. Designed (imagined) by VPLP, this 101 m catamaran will sail on its foils in the greatest comfort for the crew.

No racing yacht without a toilet or kitchen, the Nemenis One is a luxury sailing catamaran. The announced speeds make your head spin: 33 knots cruising speed, more than 50 knots in the peaks..

To do so, this catamaran will use the Oceanwings wing sail system developed by the firm on their 8m prototype. This sail unfolds and stops automatically. Thus all manoeuvres and adjustments will be entrusted to a computer, piloted from a helm station located at the front of the pod.

To wait for these speeds, the catamaran is equipped with foils and rudders with self-supporting plans. The foils are servo-controlled to ensure perfect control of heel and roll. Thus, the catamaran will be able to reach its cruising speed when installed on its 4 self-supporting planes. And if you want to increase the rhythm, you just have to tuck in a foil. The behaviour of the boat will change, but the speeds will increase.

When arriving in port (or at anchor) the foils and rudders retract, thus limiting the draught. On the engine side, the boat will be equipped with a hydrogen engine with 750 m2 of solar panels producing up to 150 kW! The engine bases also retract during sailing.

For navigation, a radar is capable of estimating the height of the waves encountered and automatically adapting the incidence of the servo foils to offer the best comfort to the crew. And in order to avoid obstacles, an augmented reality system will be available on the ice in the helm station.

In terms of comfort, this 39m wide yacht should offer a huge living space. The architects imagined cabins with opening roofs to be able to sleep under the stars. The cabins will also be designed as modules that can be disembarked at will, either to spend a night ashore or to lighten the yacht and put it into racing mode.

On paper the project makes no sense. Yet all the technologies implemented already exist today. It remains to be seen whether Nemesis will find an investor crazy enough to embark on such a project. In the meantime, it's good to dream of meeting this futuristic catamaran in an anchorage.
