Seamen's art, the ancestral art of sailors

More than a skill, seamanship is a true art practiced by sailors. But what does it consist of?

Historically, seamanship referred to the set of tasks that sailors performed on ships. From stowing cargo to rigging maintenance. In the sailing navy, ropes are essential for the proper functioning of the ship. Today, this term refers to the know-how of the knots.

In the Navy, the goal is to tie a knot and to be able to hold it without ever coming undone under tension, but to be able to be undone quickly if necessary. Even when wet. Between watches, sailors would therefore practice tying knots with whatever bits of rope they could find. But they also made accessories, protections and decorations. There are many categories of marine knots .

If at that time the sailor in charge of the ropes was the jigger, today, any self-respecting sailor must be able to quickly tie essential knots - berths , cleat knot , bowline , capstan knot or knot in eight - but also more complex work such as splices or surliures or even textile shackles .

Today, textile fibres are easier to work with, but are also very efficient. However, in order to "quilt", you need basic equipment.
