Vendée Globe 2020, who will be taking the start?

On 1st November 2019, one year before the start, we learnt the names of the 37 skippers who could potentially take part in the Vendée Globe. But in the last three months, things have changed a little bit. With 9 months to go before the start, we take stock of the registrations for this mythical solo round the world race.

The start of the Vendée Globe will take place on November 8, 2020 at 1:02 pm. And only 34 of them will be able to compete in the round-the-world race . That's five more than in the previous edition in 2016, won by Armel le Cléac'h. After several withdrawals, there are now only 35 boats hoping to take part in the toughest single-handed race around the world.

Registered sailors as of February 10, 2020

There are only seven skippers who have definitively validated their euro qualification and therefore their participation in the next Vendée Globe. As a reminder, in view of the development of the IMOCA class and the ambitions of many skippers to take part in the Everest of the Seas, the organization has established new qualification rules . The latter only have to validate their registration by paying the registration fee.

The others

Some candidates still have to qualify to hope to start the 2020 Vendée Globe. For those who have not yet participated in one of the 5 major qualifying races, they will have to finish either The Transat 2020 (solo) or the New York euros Vendée 2020 (solo). As both races are single-handed, they will not need to complete the 2000 miles in addition to a double-handed race. If they are more than 30, new rules will be used to decide between them .
