Wind Sail Racing Film Festival, at the heart of the greatest sailing competitions

On February 4, 2020 the Wind Sail Racing Film Festival, the first competitive sailing film festival, will be held. Here are the 4 films that will be shown on the screen of the Grand Rex in Paris.

While adventure and leisure films are commonplace in sailing, no festival showcases films about competitive sailing. It is from this observation that the Wind Sail Racing Film Festival organized by Tip & Shaft in collaboration with Poppop.

But there's no question of broadcasting race reports or images already seen. Four previously unreleased films will be shown on the big screen. Some of which were made especially for the festival, such as Hors quart, a 24-minute film directed by Yann Riou and produced by Gitana Team, or Race 03, an immersive concept film where we embark with the French Sail GP team.

Women in the spotlight

Maiden is the headliner of this festival. This 97-minute feature film directed by Alex Holmes and produced by Sony Pictures tells the story of 24-year-old Tracy Edwards and her all-women crew on the world's greatest round-the-world sailing race, the Whitbread. It's 1989 and sailing is for men only. More than a fight, it is a societal film about the place of women in this merciless world of a male sport.

A race of suspense

The 50 e Solitaire du Figaro, in 2019, will go down in the annals. First season of Figaro 3, it brought together an exceptional line-up and was the scene of many twists and turns. This 15-minute film signed Julien Kerleroux and produced by Sea Events looks back on this edition won by Yoann Richomme. There are also the spectacular images of the famous Alderney Passage, where the strong current had turned the tables on everyone.

The opinion of the organization

"We didn't want to miss out on the sailing world race that kept everyone on the edge of their seats in 2019. The set was fabulous, the suspense at its peak. Yoann Richomme, winner of the event will be on stage to tell us about his experience."

In the intimacy of the sailors

In November 2019, four Ultims took the start of the Brest Atlantiques, a race linking Brest to Brest after a loop between the two Atlantiques. Hors-Quart is a 24 minute film directed by Yann Riou, mediaman onboard alongside Franck Cammas and Charles Caudrelier, the big winners of the event on the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild.

The cameraman is a regular of the two sailors, whom he has already rubbed shoulders with many times and for a long time, notably during the Volvo Ocean Race.

The opinion of the organization

"Off-quarter, that's Yann Riou's status on the trimaran Maxi Edmond de Rothschild. It's a rare, original and exclusive film of intimacy that highlights a very spontaneous relationship between these three men, and especially between two immense champions."

At the heart of the action

Breed 03 signed Eloi Stichelbaut is produced by France SailGP Team and PolaRYSE. For 12 minutes, the go pro attached to Billy Besson's helmet takes us into the heart of the action. No music, no comments, just the crew's radio chatter and the helmsman's crazy breathing for maximum tension.

The opinion of the organization

"It's an immersive concept film that gets you on board. There is no music or commentary, only the sound of the foils, spray, breathing and radio chatter of the crew. The tension is at its comble?! This different view of the race gives us a form of intimacy at 40 knots."
