Test / The Tribord 5S, inflatable dinghy Decathlon, users' opinion

Decathlon has launched an inflatable, accessible and intuitive dinghy, the 5S. On the beach of Port La Foret, the inflatable boat intrigues, amazes and attracts attention and comments. We have tested this dinghy with a panel of users: a sailing beginner, a 10 year old girl, a multisupport sailor, and an experienced sailing instructor. They gave us their relevant and common sense opinions.

Lisa 10 years old: "I like this boat, even if it's not the most beautiful. I've had a lot of fun. It's practical, comfortable and it goes fast".

"In a small boat, I know the Optimist. I did two internships during holidays and we do them at school on Wednesdays. I think the Decathlon boat looks like the Optimist even though it's bigger and inflatable.

What I like is that you sit better and don't get your butt wet. Besides, I'm not afraid of desalinizing with.. the Decathlon boat . In addition, it cannot sink while the Optimist can fill with water.

I like this boat and even though it's big and I'm light, I find it's easy to make it, except for the sail which is harder (Editor's note: the sail area is doubled).

Besides, it's handy to be able to put a boat in a bag when you're done. I feel like I'm going faster than an Optimist and I like it. However, I don't think it's very nice for a boat"

Patrick 56 years old, director of nautical center: "This boat is gliding, lightness, fun, it's really surprising."

"I'm bluffed by the sweetness of the whole thing. The helm is very smooth, the boat is light and you can feel it. There's no friction, no hard point.

When tacking or gybing, there is plenty of room on board to manoeuvre, even for a large adult. Thanks to the stability, you have plenty of time to do a tack or jib. In fact, you're on a platform and you position yourself a little bit where you want without any major fear of the consequences of a bad placement.

The boat is light and you feel it, you glide on the water like a paddle. It doesn't feel like a traditional dinghy, it doesn't feel like it's being pushed into the water. And then it's fast, I had a lot of fun on the way through, you accelerate and then you pull on the tiller to bring the small wave down. Now I'd like to try it in more than 20 knots, it must be fun.

In leisure use, during holidays, with family and friends, you can put on a child and an adult or two children who can navigate safely. Moreover, if it desalinates, you won't hurt yourself with a sharp angle or a hard spot, because there is none. Everything on board is light, like the boom for example, and it contributes greatly to safety.

I can see myself having a few Decathlon dinghies on the beach for rental and initiation."

Alex 32 years old: "It's a nice, responsive boat to get used to sailing."

"I did a bit of boating when I was a teenager, some sailing courses at the Glénans. I'm currently doing a windsurfing course to test, we spend a lot of time at eau?!

To speak from my experience, I would say that I know how to do a bit of dinghies even if it's been a long time since I've practiced. I'm happy to have tried this dinghy, it's reassuring, light and easy to manoeuvre. It doesn't lean much and you don't have the impression that it's going to be desalinising".

Bertrand 35 years old: "He's hyper-responsive and fun, it slides by itself. And this boat is not a pain in the ass, and that compte?!"

"I sail quite regularly on different supports. This inflatable boat is intriguing and amazing. From a distance, on the beach, I wondered what it was.

The handling is intuitive and ultra fast. You get on board without looking for the right way to do it and instantly you settle in, you find the sheet and the bar at hand. I appreciated the nautical qualities, as soon as there is a small gust the boat accelerates, but without heeling. Even with pressure in the sails, you have to get downwind to make it heel seriously. I've tried to heel the boat to see where the limits are and it's very stable, it's very forgiving of overconfidence or mistakes."
