Interview / Stan Thuret: "I would like to create a competition around Finistère, FinistèreMan"

Stan Thuret the navigator filmmaker has just made a FinistèreMan. This multi-sport challenge inspired by the IronMan combines swimming, sailing, cycling and running. On departure and arrival from Port La Forêt, he established a 38-hour reference time. He tells us about his project.

Stanilas Thuret who currently sails on the Figaro 3 Everial is a multi-activity sportsman 3.0. An Ironman fan since the beginning, he decided to take on a real challenge: to make his own triathlon in the heart of Finistère. On the program of its FinistèreMan: swimming, sailing, running and cycling. A 38-hour tour to be discovered in a short 35-second video before the long version, which should arrive soon.

Can you tell us about this projet??

I had this idea a year ago. Cycling, running, swimming are activities I often do to prepare myself. Apart from the Mini Transat - which is the most beautiful race in the world - I am an Ironman fan. I think it's great and I've always dreamed of doing it.

To participate, you have to qualify, it's complicated and I don't have time to prepare for it by running offshore. So I thought to myself, I'm making up my own test. This multi-sport challenge consists of swimming, sailing, cycling and running around and across Finistère. I called it FinistèreMan.

Present us this "test"

I jumped from the launch hold in Port La Forêt for 3?800 m of swimming to Cape Coz, where the Figaro 3 Everial was waiting for me at anchor. Then I set off for 120 miles towards Roscoff. There was not much wind and it took me 22 hours to get to the port. It's difficult to choose the right weather window and find the right compromise for both going fast on a boat and having a nice high-pressure system for cycling and running.

I chose to go on a rather cool boat trip with 13 knots of wind. I was under spinnaker, through and upwind to finish.

On Saturday, I continued with 180 km of cycling and 2053 m of altitude difference. It took me 7 h 15 to leave Roscoff to reach Port Manech' via Morlaix, the Monts d'Arrée, Châteauneuf du Faou, Quimperlé and Pont-Aven.

Finally I finished with a last stage of 42 km in running, which lasted 5 h 30. I followed the coastal path along the sea to Port La Forêt via Trevignon, the cove of Rospico, Minaouet, Poulven and the beach of the 4 Sardines.

The fun part of this test is knowing where you position the "sleep" cursor. I had to take naps by boat, but only for 10 minutes per 2 or 3 hours.

I joined Port Laf at night at 11:00 p. m. I thought I would arrive earlier and spend less time under sail.

What will happen next with your tentative??

The idea was to test the course, validate it and establish a reference time that can be improved. Now that I know him, I would like to organize a real race with other sailors to establish a new reference time.

It could also be a relay race, a bit like Red Bull races with teams bringing together several types of athletes. It would allow us to mix the worlds of endurance sports. We have the same eating problems, we have the same sleep management problems.

The idea would be to create a real competition around Finistère: FinistèreMan!
