How to clean your semi-rigid floats?

© Nautic Clean

Cleaning the floats of your RIB requires specific products for inflatables, at the risk of damaging your boat. Here are some tips to maintain your floats and clean them before the season.

Like a rigid shell, a semi-rigid one is maintained. But if cleaning the polyester part is not a particular problem, floats - whether made of neoprene hypalon or PVC - require specific products, otherwise their impermeability will be damaged.

Float maintenance depends on the use of your boat. But it is good to rinse them with clean water after each outing. This cleaning will make it possible to check for scratches or tears. It is important to check the condition of your floats regularly to ensure that there is no mould or disbonding of the fabric.

Be aware that good maintenance of the floats extends their life, especially for neoprene hypalon. As we saw in a previous subject the latter is much more resistant to ageing than PVC.

Here are some tips for maintaining your floats:

  • Choose your product according to your fabric. There are many brands of products dedicated to tyre cleaning.
  • Do not use aggressive products, prefer a mild detergent that you will use every 3 to 4 outlets, depending on your use. Choose your product according to the state of soiling and/or the presence of mould.
  • If you have any doubts about a product, test it on a small, invisible surface
  • Do not use solvents - such as acetone for example - that could damage the fabric
  • For small surfaces, you can dry clean with methylated spirits diluted in water
  • During washing change water and product several times and finish with a good rinse. If there is any product left on your floats, the UV could fix the traces.
  • Avoid sunbathing for the same reasons
  • Do not use abrasive or sponge with scraper. Choose a classic sponge, bridge brush or glove.
  • Protect yourself with gloves.
