Mayreau, a beauty spot in the heart of the Grenadines

Mayreau, paradise on earth?

We hesitated for a long time to share with you this splendid video of Poussé par le Vent. Not because of the subject matter - a small paradise on earth - but because of the length of the video! But after all, these 2 minutes of sublime images are well worth seeing and reviewing! And as a bonus, we even introduce you to the island, its activities and anchorages!

Sarah and Aurélien set anchor in the heavenly waters of Mayreau, a small island in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The sea is incredibly transparent turquoise, the sand is bright white, the vegetation is lush green and the coconut trees border the beaches. In short, make no mistake about it, Mayreau has a little tunes of paradis?! "It's like being in Polynesia", adds Sarah?!

So since we don't have much to tell you about on this video (we can kitesurf, collect coconuts en masse and taste cakes from neighbouring boats that travel in paddle) and the images are sufficient on their own, we decided to try to introduce you to the island quickly.

A little history and geography

Mayreau is the smallest inhabited island in the Grenadines. Located in the Caribbean, it is only 4 km2 and has some 300 inhabitants. If its landscapes are splendid, it is apparently one of the poorest islands in the Grenadines. It is located between Union in the southwest and Canouan in the northeast, while to the west is the Tobago Cays

On the island there is no car, but only one road that connects Saltwhistle Bay to Saline Bay and crosses the village of Old Wall. Saline Bay owes its name to the salt pond located east of the beach. Salt was previously exported, but is now only used by the inhabitants. This village, located at the top of a hill in the southwest of the island, can be considered as the "capital" since it is home to the majority of the population. Today Mayreau lives mainly from fishing and tourism.

Fresh water has recently become available in Mayreau, thanks to Father Divonne, who in 1972, participated in the installation of a water recuperator on the hill. The same applies to electricity, which has only been supplied by a general generator since 2002. Saltwhistle Bay also hosts a small seaside resort.

Crossing the island from north to south (and vice versa) will only take you half an hour on foot along the main (and only) road.

What faire??

Apart from kitesurfing, you can also visit the wreck of the Purina, an English gunboat sunk in 1914 at a depth of 12 m. At the top of the island, you will enjoy a superb view of Tobago Cayes, Canouan and Union. Mayreau also has freshwater springs on its eastern part. Also take advantage of the clear waters for snorkeling and enjoy the incredible mouillages?! Also enjoy the island's cuisine - the famous lolos - traditional Caribbean restaurants.

Where mouiller??

You can anchor in three different places: Salt Whistle Bay, Saline Bay and Windward Bay. The latter is located upwind of the island between the Tobago Cayes lagoon on the east coast and is particularly suitable for diving

Salt Whistle Bay is in the north of the island. While it is certainly beautiful, it is sometimes crowded in high season. Not necessarily pleasant to be stuck together, but paradise at a price.

Finally, Saline Bay, in the south of the island, is less frequented, while being just as sublime. It offers the advantage of direct access to the village as well as two snorkelling spots
