An internship where you build your own boat!

Starting an amateur construction often questions the apprentice builders. Faced with the number of questions, the Club Nautique de Sèvre decided to organise a shipbuilding course. Registrants even leave with their own boat!

The Club Nautique de Sèvres (92) has just tried an interesting experience. He organized a training course to approach the techniques of building a boat in epoxy plywood. The aim of this association is to give a taste of construction, to set foot in the stirrup to amateurs and if possible to make them want to embark on more complex projects.

A Galup 280 as a model

For this internship, you come to work every Saturday and at the end you leave with your own boat! For this purpose, the site has proposed to build a Galup 280, a Philippe Saint-Arroman plan that can be used as an annex or a small leisure dinghy. Small in size, this sailboat is simple to build since it does not require any scarf (extension of the plywood plates) and uses all the notions of epoxy plywood construction with fillet joints and stratifications.

7 Saturdays dedicated to the construction of the hull

Launched in the fall of 2018, 6 people registered for the course (4 men and 2 women) and each one built his own boat. If the registration fee is 650?, it includes all the supplies (wood, resin, protection...) and the assistance of 3 club leaders.

By working every Saturday from 10am to 6pm, it was finally after 7 days of work that the boats' hulls were finished. It is now up to the apprentices to paint them and make the rigging and oars.

Other internships in forecasting

Faced with the enthusiasm of the internship, new dates are probably being set for next October. But already a number of participants have joined the ranks.
