Special Edition / Evinrude makes it easier to reengineer his outboard boat

The renovation of a motor boat sometimes involves changing the engine. Remoting an outboard motor is not a very delicate operation. If you choose to install an Evinrude engine, this step is even easier.

The outboards are fixed to the transom by 4 bolts. The fixing holes are standardised. So you can switch from one brand to another without any problem. It will just be necessary to make sure of the height of the assembly at the time of the first tests to get all the quintessence from its outboard.

When ordering the motor, the length of the shaft must be chosen according to the length of the transom. These shaft lengths are not all identical according to the marks. The basic assembly will consist in aligning the anti-cavitation plate with the bottom of the hull. We will then see with the first sea trials, to enhance this assembly to offer the engine to work with the best compromise power-consumption-torque.

The management

Unlike the competition, Evinrude offers an integrated steering system with its outboards. It will therefore be necessary to unload the existing steering, whether mechanical (by cable) or hydraulic, to connect the 2 hydraulic hoses on the Evinrude. Indeed, the hydraulic cylinder that controls this direction is now at the level of the engine pivot. At the steering wheel, the 2 hoses must be connected to a hydraulic pump located under the steering wheel.

Fuel supply

Injection engines, which are now common in outboards, require a high purity of fuel. It is therefore important to install a settling filter on the fuel supply system. The quality of the gasoline and especially the absence of water in the fuel are the guarantee of a good functioning. The injectors do not tolerate water and seize quickly.

The power supply

The new outboards require a high-power battery. In the case of a reengineering, it is often necessary to ensure that the model on board is sufficiently powerful. To know the useful intensity, refer to the manufacturer's documentation. For example, the Evinrude V6s require 110A batteries..

The network connection

While the outboards were driven with cable controls, the new motors, particularly those in the Evinrude G2 range, are controlled with electric controls. Only one electric cable runs from the motor to the accelerator controls.

This cable is actually a NMEA 2000 network. It is through this network that information flows between the engine and the dashboard. The advantage is that it can circulate a lot of information and install its controls and displays without the mechanical constraints imposed by the old cables.

It is also on this network that the display supplied with the motor is connected. From this screen, the user can program the electric power steering (3 steps to harden or not the steering) or activate the i-trim (automatic trim adjusted according to the engine speed and load).
