Tall ships celebrate Bordeaux's 20th anniversary with a wine celebration

Bordeaux celebrates Wine, with the honour of the great sailing ships

For its 20th anniversary, the not-to-be-missed event for Bordeaux wine lovers - Fête le Vin - welcomes 20 exceptional European tall ships to the quays of the Garonne. Organised every two years, this event, which welcomed 600,000 visitors in 2016, will be held from 14 to 18 June 2018.

Visit incredible old rigs

Bordeaux is known for its vineyards and wines, but also for its maritime heritage. And to celebrate its 20 e anniversary, the organisation decided to bring in splendid historic sailing ships from all over Europe. Some will arrive from Liverpool and Dublin as part of the Tall Ships Regatta, others will arrive especially from French and European ports for this great gathering.

Around thirty old rigs will be presented on the banks of the Garonne, including "stars" of maritime heritage: Kruzensthern, Tarangini, Belle Poule, Étoile du Roy, Atyla, El GaleÓn, Belem, Vera Cruz..

More than 20 yachts will be open to visitors, giving them the opportunity to discover their history, how they work, meet the crews and soak up the sea air. Visitors will also be able to attend the crew parade, the songs and music of the sailors.

Visits to the Tall Ships (Class A & B) will be paid for between 10.30 and 12.30 (and on reservation, a way to make sure you can get on deck) and free between 14.00 and 18.30, organised from Thursday 14 to Sunday 17 June and cost 5 euros. Visits to the rigging (classes B and C) are free and organised every day except 18 June.

Three of the sailing boats present will offer daily outings on the Garonne between the stone bridge and the Chaban-Delmas bridge. One hour of navigation to discover Bordeaux and its quays from the river. For the lucky ones, it will be possible to spend an evening on board to enjoy the fireworks show on the Garonne.

An exhibition to understand the link between the vineyard and the sea

An ephemeral structure will allow you to discover how Bordeaux wines are linked to the Garonne, the estuary and the oceans. An exhibition trail to evoke the appearance of the Vitis biturica in the Roman Burdigala, to show the different ships that were used over the centuries to transport the wines..

Numerous stands on land will take part in the festival. For example, the Editions Glénat will be present at the Chasse Marée stand and will organise signing sessions. Among others, Jean-Benoît Héron with notably his latest novelty "Les bateaux de ma bibliothèque" (The boats of my library) will participate in this event.

The starting parade

After 4 days ashore, the tall ships will leave the quays of Bordeaux on Monday 18 June at 11 am and will set sail again in a large procession to the sound of cannons and foghorns. A moment that can be experienced from the inside, aboard the Étoile du Roy, from Bordeaux to Pauillac?
