A canoe designed as an object of art

The Italian design and architecture studio BorromeodeSilva has embarked on a beautiful design exercise: to create a luxurious and magnificent canoe in carbon fibre and teak.

This luxurious canoe is a unique object created in collaboration with the architect Federico Santa Maria, boat designer. It was not designed to answer a problem (sailing) but to be exhibited as an art object.

"With this canoe, we wanted to showcase our ability to blend traditional craftsmanship with highly technical processes and materials." explains the design firm.

The hull of the canoe is a mixture of carbon fiber intermingled with copper and teak wood. "The copper wire woven into the carbon gives depth to the texture and sparkles in the sunlight, making the material come alive. It feels like the water reflects off the canoe." details BorromeodeSilva.

The teak surface was laid by hand by carpenters (Maestri d'Ascia or Master of the Axe, one of the oldest and most revered crafts in Genoa). The sober and pure design blends touches of wood with the black structure of the canoe. The oars line up on the back, creating a sort of wing like a wink to the Cadillac. A reminder of the automotive world so dear to the Italians.

The design firm is now working on the integration of a small electric motor and may consider marketing its canoe.
