The 2024 Olympic Games for Paris, sailing for Marseille!

The 2024 Olympic Games will take place in France, it's official! The decision was taken by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on 13 September 2017. As Paris cannot host the sailing events, it is the city of Marseille that will do it, preferred to 5 other cities competing in the sailing events (Brest, Hyères, La Rochelle, Le Havre and Lorient-Morbihan).

An experience of the nautical event

With 51 yacht clubs and 13,000 members in the Bouches du Rhône, Marseille hosts more than 100 nautical events every year. The city hosts regional regattas as well as major international competitions such as The Race (2001), The World Sailing Games (2002), The Audi Med Cup (from 2008 to 2011), The Marseille One Design (2014 and 2015) and the Grande Parade Maritime (2013).

A harbour and a perfect organization for the reception of the events

The Phocaean city benefits from a favourable harbour and well oriented in relation to the prevailing winds. For the 2024 Olympic sailing events, Marseille proposed a very compact Olympic site project with a competition area, reception facilities and spectator areas, all located in the very heart of the city.

The program is based on 6 major axes:

  • The Roucas Blanc Olympic Marina which will host the entire Olympic series
  • The Kennedy Corniche which will host a spectator tribune of 5,000 people during the games
  • The South Rade of Marseille which will group together the sea racing circles, which can be seen from the Prado and the city's beaches.
  • The Borély racecourse, in the immediate vicinity of the future Marina will host the temporary Olympic Village.
  • The Mucem esplanade The "Live Site" will be installed, where 10,000 visitors will be able to follow all the Games and events.
  • The Velodrome Stadium will host the football matches, as Marseille will also host the Olympic football events.

Become the world capital of sailing and boating

Nearly 600 athletes will be gathered in Marseille during the competition (plus their technical and medical staff). But the challenge for the city is to be able to welcome the competitors for their training phases for the next 7 years.
