Sea trip for SNSM that could have been avoided

A wing that flies away and it is all the rescue means that are used to recover a potential shipwreck. A simple phone call can avoid this waste of resources: saving money and ensuring a good intervention in the event of a real rescue.

The story takes place on our shores, it is so stupid that we wonder how it could not have been avoided. Storytelling.

On August 16th 2017 at 17h46 the SNSM of Portsall received a call from Cross Corsen: A kite surfer was spotted in difficulty between the island of Rocervo and the channel of Relec in front of Lampaul-Ploudalmézeau.

The SNSM sends its semi-rigid SNS 504 to the area to try to locate the shipwrecked man. After an hour of search, the kite surf sail is found hooked to a locker buoy. But no kite surfer..

The Cross triggers the search helicopter to take off. The semi-rigid SNS 504 continues the search.

Still without news from the shipwreck, at 19:58 the cross triggers the intervention of the All Weather Canoe SNS 093 "La Portsallaise" to extend the search area. The semi-rigid SNS 504 returns to the port to take on board the crew of the Canot Tout Temps (this one is at anchor).

But this boat has no time to sail, the Cross cancels the alert: a witness claims to have seen the sail flying off the beach.

The story has a happy ending. So it's a false alarm. But this one triggered costly means.

Following this debauchery of means only to retrieve a wing, the SNSM sends this information message:

"In a case like this, it is essential to inform the Cross on the uncontrolled take-off of the sail, which would have avoided the disturbance of rescuers, unnecessary expenses, and the implementation of means that can be called upon for real rescues."
