Nomad, an AIS transponder for sailors who change sides

The Nomad allows you to keep your transponder with you when you change boats. It will be useful when renting, or if you're doing convoying. A clever device that meets a very precise expectation. Probably not a mass demand, but which will fill a niche.

For all nomadic sailors, Digital Yacht launches a portable AIS transponder. It can move from one boat to another thanks to a very brief installation. This is a product that will satisfy not only the boat's couriers, but also the renters who often change tack during embarkation.

The Nomad, that's its name, finds its power supply from a USB socket. A VHF antenna delivered with the device connects behind the box and holds on the deck with a suction cup. This 25 cm antenna should be placed on the highest possible point to maximize the range of the device.

The Nomad transmits the AIS information over Wifi. Up to 7 different devices can connect to it simultaneously. The on-board PC, tablet or smartphone can then retrieve this information and display it on their favorite mapping software.

The interest of the Nomad is to be an AIS transponder. This means that it receives AIT data, but also transmits information from the ship to all other AIS. To do this, it is necessary to have the MMSI number of the boat being navigated and to program it into the device. This is done from the application supplied with the unit. If you are navigating on a boat that does not have an MMSI, the transponder, which is not programmed, becomes a simple receiver.

This portable device is available at 715 euros
