For a teak deck like new!

Before and after teak cleaning.

On deck or in the cockpit, teak is really comfortable on boats. Whether you walk barefoot for comfort underfoot or to adhere well when the sea forms, this wood is an ally of technical and aesthetic choice. But it also requires some annual maintenance. Matt Chem offers a 3-step interview.

Teak is a wood naturally saturated with oil. Rich in oleoresin, it protects itself and resists well to the assaults of the sun or the saline atmosphere. At the ready retail that this wood always ends up getting intoxicated. Even if it doesn't put it in danger, it's undeniably less aesthetic..

Fortunately, there are products designed to restore the original appearance of this wood. The French Matt Chem offers a 2-step treatment that requires no effort. No need to rub!

A wood made of two fibres

Teak consists of two fibres. The first is very hard while the second is much softer. It contains"teak oil" which protects the wood. Because of this difference in resistance, do not rub the wood with a hard brush! To rub the wood, especially in the direction of the fibres, is to dig the soft fibres and to leave only the hard fibres. Teak becomes aggressive to the feet and can even generate splinters.

Phase 1: Cleaning

Matt Chem uses Sun Teak to remove dirt from the wood. Start by watering the spot with a jet (no need for high pressure). Sun Teck is diluted in a bucket (dosage: 1 volume of product for 5 volumes of water). 5 litres of diluted product covering approximately 7 m2. Simply spread the product with a soft brush, or even a mop, to soak the deck.

Leave on for 15 minutes without touching anything and then rinse thoroughly with a jet of water. This first step removes grease and hydrocarbon stains.

Phase 2: Reviving

To give teak back its colour, you must use Bright Teak. Always on the wet deck, you spread diluted Bright Teck (dosage: 1 volume of product for 5 volumes of water). As for phase 1, you wait 15 minutes for the product to take effect before rinsing it again with a jet. You're gonna see some kind of black juice coming out of your deck. It's the teak that rejects all the dirt. He then finds his pretty blonde of origin.

Phase 3: Feeding

To protect the teak and prevent it from turning grey too quickly, it is advisable to feed it. This 3 e phase must be done on a perfectly dry bridge. Do not hesitate to wait at least 24 hours (or more) to have a beautiful dry surface in depth.

There are 3 possible solutions:

  • oil
  • saturator
  • sealer

All these solutions are applied with a brush and last approximately one season (one year).

Oil

Teak oil nourishes by bringing fat to the teak. It limits the cracking effect on too dry a bridge. It is applied with a brush, letting the product penetrate well into the wood. It exists in 2 shades: Wonder Oil Teak (colourless) or Golden Oil (amber).

Saturator

Matt Chem offers the Stopo which protects the wood by preventing moisture from penetrating. If the product is white at the time of application, it becomes translucent when drying. It has a waterproof effect on wood. It migrates into the wood making it hydrophobic.

Sealer

It is a term that comes from American products (which are very fond of them). It is a kind of 2 in 1 product that makes wood waterproof while impregnating it with oil. It leaves a slightly amber teak color. Sealer is a bit like glaze with a solvent that disappears after application.

And then what?

Once his deck has been revived and oiled, he requires a brief maintenance. As its hull or any other external part, it is enough to clean it with a shampoo hull and deck. Always take care to act with a very soft bristle brush.
