The Seabike is an underwater thruster that allows you to explore the seabed without getting tired. At the front, there are handles (a bit like on a bicycle), but they are not used to steer the machine, you do it with your body. At the rear, pedals operate a propeller that turns 3.7 times faster than the crankset. To use it, you slide it underneath you, the handles at pelvis level and your feet on the pedals, and you move forward lying down in the water. It is the movement of the pedals that starts the propeller. Its removable floats make it float while you settle down and it can be used both on the surface and underwater.
Unlike flippers, for which the dorsal and abdominal muscles are used to move around, here the thighs and buttocks are used. "To reach the same speed as with flippers, we use much less energy (-30% of muscular energy) "explains Olivier, Seabike importer in France.
The Seabike can reach the same speed as an underwater scooter, i.e. 3.6 km/h (one meter per second) and up to 8 km/h (8 mph) at top speed. The propeller blades are adjustable (even underwater) so that you can choose your propulsion mode according to the conditions of the moment. "We prefer speed or propulsion force", says Olivier.
The underwater thruster is delivered in a bag (70 cm/3.5 kg) and can be assembled quickly (30 sec) and without tools. It can be adjusted according to its size thanks to its telescopic mast.
There are several options to customize the Seabike. Starting with a vest with a hook that clips onto the handles to free your hands. You can then associate the Seabike with another sliding sport, such as bodyboarding for example.
The Seabike is distributed in France by Big Toys on Board via their website, at a price of 449 euros. It will then be available in specialized stores.
