2016 Vendée Globe: Short of food, Sébastien Destremau tries his hand at fishing

Sébastien Destremau is currently 1711 miles from Les Sables-d'Olonne, at the latitude of the island of Madeira. Deprived of wind for several days now, he has been sailing in a 4/5 knot calm and is taking advantage of this to go fishing and try to make up his food deficit. To discover in video.

Still 1711 miles to go to reach Les Sables-d'Olonne and almost nothing left to eat! Sébastien Destremau is suffering from a real food restriction, and he is due to finish his Vendée Globe around 10th March 2017. He told us he had planned 120 days of food.. but reached the end of its reserves after more than 115 days at sea. The fault lies with a flood of its food reserve and a forecast that was seen to be a bit low..

"When you find out about this, it's a hard blow. You don't have much time left to reapply your food. But I'm not starving. It's just painful." said the skipper on Franceinfo.

To remedy this inconvenience, Sebastien now only eats one meal a day and takes advantage of the calm weather to try his hand at fishing. Unsuccessful attempts that he shares with us on video.. "With 4/5 knots of wind, I'm trolling for food, as I'm a bit short of food with a week to go before the finish in Les Sables-d'Olonne. As a result, I said to myself that the boat is quite slow and that if I can catch something, that wouldn't be bad... But I'm a bit bad at fishing. Well, we'll see!" says the enthusiastic skipper.

Indeed, the only fish the skipper has managed to catch is a flying fish which has been stranded on the deck of his IMOCA TechnoFirst-Ocean for several days and dried out in the sun..
