Which motorboat for which sailing program?

There are many different types of powerboats and they are sometimes difficult to differentiate. What is a daycruiser? What is the difference between a speedboat and a cabin cruiser? Here are the different types of motorboats and their characteristics.

Cabin-cruiser

Features Day cruiser: This is a cross between a day cruiser and a speedboat, as it allows you to spend several nights on board in comfort. There is a cabin (sometimes even a mid-cabin or a saloon that can be transformed into a bed), a kitchenette, a bathroom, as well as sunbathing areas (in the front and/or in the back).

Open hull

Features The boat has an open deck plan, with no cabin or living area. We find in this category walk-around (with a central console that can house a cabin or toilet), bowrider (with double console) or off-center consoles.

Day-cruiser

Features : A day-cruiser has a decked bow that houses a small cabin with kitchenette and bathroom. The cockpit can be equipped with a saloon convertible into a sunbathing area.

Navigation program Coastal navigation for the day with the possibility of spending one or two nights on board.

Dinghy

Features Dinghy: Originally, the dinghy (used in India) was a small open boat with no deck. Since then, it is referred to as a small pleasure boat with an outboard engine, whose deck protects the large cockpit.

Fishing

Characteristic : Sport fishing boats, typical of the American coasts, for big game fishing. They can be equipped with a cabin and all the necessary comfort to spend one or more nights on board.

Fishing and tuna fishing

Features The boat is equipped with a wheelhouse housing the cockpit, a bed, a kitchenette and a toilet. The large aft cockpit is clear for easy fishing.

Pneumatic / Semi-rigid

Inboard version

Features This boat can be soft-bottomed or semi-rigid and has inflatable tubes (hypalon, PVC, polyurethane or polyethylene).

Motorization : Outboard or Inboard for the bigger models

Navigation program The smallest models (inflatable) can be used as tenders, the larger models are suitable for coastal navigation, as well as for short cruises (cabin, bathroom and kitchen in the larger models).

Outboard version

Runabout

Features : Very fast motorboat with a windshield surrounding the windshield. The front is often decked.

Motorization : Outboard or Inboard

Navigation program : high speed coastal

Trawler

Features Long distance travel boats inspired by fishing boats and whose semi-displacement or displacement hull allows them to sail for a long time at low speed. They are comfortably equipped to live aboard for a long time.
