A routing module for ScanNav software

ScanNav is a navigation software that runs under Windows. Very complete, available with many maps, it only lacked a routing module to meet all the demands. This will be done on the version available at the Paris Boat Show 2016, version that we had the chance to discover in preview!

The next version of Scannav available at the Paris Boat Show (December 2016) will integrate a routing module. The only thing missing was this module to make this PC-based software fully complete.

The routing takes into account the following points:

  • Choice of the GRIB file and the polar file of the boat
  • Tidal currents are taken into account. The information is taken from the GRIB of currents or from the SHOM data
  • Ability to apply a ratio to polar, weather or current information
  • Taking into account (or not) the possibility of walking with the engine for the routing (sail only, mixed sail and engine or engine only).
  • Consideration of user-defined coastlines and/or hazard zones for routing calculation
  • Taking into account of "penalties" for tacking and/or gybing when calculating the routing
  • Possibility to avoid areas with strong winds (wind force can be set)
  • Possibility of defining limit angles for windward and/or broad reaching to avoid uncomfortable points of sail (too close or downwind)

The routing module is also accompanied by a Polars module which, in addition to managing the polars for routing, allows you to visualize, via a dedicated repeater, the performances in real time in relation to the theoretical polars. The screen shows where the performances are in real time. On the graph, the red triangle is the boat. The theoretical performances are the blue curves (the 2 curves being those defined in the polar file, with the wind below and above the real wind).

We have obtained screenshots of this future version. There is still some work to do on the interface side, which is for the moment a "developer interface". For example, the walkthrough is currently just in a text window and will be revised to be more presentable in the final commercialized version.

Other evolutions are already planned. For example, multipoint routing (in which the user can choose the points of passage) is not yet taken into account. This module will be included in the version that will follow the one presented at the show.

If routing is usually reserved for sailors or sailboat racers, the possibility to perform a motorized routing with the next ScanNav will be of interest to boaters sailing on trawlers.
