Vulcan 9, a B&G multifunctional dedicated to sailing yachtsmen

Multifunctional devices replace the multitude of screens that used to flourish at the card table. But what are the new functions of these versatile devices?

B&G launches a new multifunctional device. After the Vulcan 5 and 7, it is now the Vulcan 9 that makes its appearance. Built around a 9-inch diagonal screen, it includes the latest specific functions for sailing developed by the brand. The Vulcan 9 will of course be coupled (in NMEA 2000) with sensors.

It can receive wind (wind vane and anemometer), speed (speedometer) and depth (sounder) information. It is also compatible with the FowardScan sounder, which provides forward visibility of the boat (to better approach an anchorage). The Vulcan 9 can also receive images from Broadband 3G or 4G radars. Connected with the VHF V50 DSC, it displays all AIS data. Not to mention the connection with the autopilot. Finally, the Vulcan 9 can also handle music with the SonicHub audio system.

That's why this type of device is nicknamed Multifunction. It represents the modern card table. In order to remain simple to use and above all efficient, given the amount of data that can be displayed, B&G has developed some very specific functions, which we will discuss in detail here.

SailSteer

This is the most magical function for all sailors. In fact, on a single screen you can see the wind, the course to the waypoint, the laylines, but also the influence of the current.

By superimposing this very complete rose on the chart, the understanding of laylines and wind shifts is considerably improved.

Race Timer

This screen gives all the useful information to take a regatta start. Time remaining, distance to the lineâ?¦

Smart Maneuver

It is a function that takes over the autopilot to perform a tack. An ideal function for solo sailing.

Sail Steering

This is the classic autopilot setting, which steers either according to a memorized heading (based on the compass) or according to the true or apparent wind as desired. In this case, the autopilot naturally follows the wind angle variations.

Wind Plot

It is a graphical display that follows the evolution of the wind over time. You will be able to see if the wind is getting stronger or if it is turning.

GoFree Shop

The Vulcan 9 has an integrated Wifi receiver. This allows the unit to connect to the Internet, via a marina or a smartphone. This connection gives access to the GoFree Shop for downloading charts or software updates. This Wifi point also makes it possible to use a tablet or smartphone as a mirror display of the Vulcan 9. Mirroring means that the same information is simultaneously displayed on the multifunction and on the mobile. This gives you a second, very economical on-board station.

The Vulcan 9 will be available in December 2016 from 1149 euros
