Look out for jellyfish infested anchorages!

Jellyfish

Jellyfish have been invading Mediterranean waters for several years. Although their stings are often benign, they are no less painful. So why not check their presence (or absence) before choosing your next anchorage on the Mediterranean coast? This is what the Meduse.acri.fr website offers.

Quietly at anchor in the bay of Antibes, you enjoy a sunny day on your boat. To refresh yourself, what better than a good swim in the deep blue sea. But barely in the water, dozens of small transparent mushrooms surround you and you feel a great pain... The jellyfish has struck again! And maybe you could have avoided it..

To date, there is no systematic observation network for jellyfish sightings. This is why the Meduse.acri.fr proposes in a collaborative way to count jellyfish in the Mediterranean, and more particularly in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Region.

To do so, you just need to create an account on the site which will provide you with a password. If you are at sea or on a beach and you wish to inform about the presence (or absence) of jellyfish, just go to the "Declare" section. There, you fill in a small observation questionnaire :

  • Choice of sector
  • Latitude and longitude
  • Beach
  • Date and Time
  • Weather conditions (wind, waves, illumination)
  • Type of jellyfish (with supporting photos you indicate the type of jellyfish encountered or the absence of jellyfish). By clicking on "learn more" you get some information about the species.
  • Comments

To find out about the presence of jellyfish, simply go to the "View Observations" section where coloured jellyfish will be indicated on the map according to their location and frequency of observation. Green flags on the contrary indicate healthy waters.
