A round-the-world trip through the two poles for Mike Horn

Mike Horn is one of the great adventurers and explorers of the 21st century, known for his numerous expeditions and circumnavigations of the globe and more recently for his appearances on The Island. Since May 8, he left Monaco aboard his sailboat Pangaea for a round-the-world trip through the two poles.

The great adventurer Mike Horn is going on an adventure again! He is known for his extraordinary expeditions around the world, including several round-the-world trips such as the circumnavigation of the equator on foot and bicycle (40,000 km), the circumnavigation of the Arctic Circle on foot, bicycle, kayak, sailboat, skis and kite-drawn skis, and more recently the circumnavigation of all five continents without any motorized transport.

A crossing by sail and ski

On May 8, 2016, Mike Horn set off from Monaco on a new expedition, which he has been preparing for many years: Pole2Pole. The idea is to reach the two poles (from South to North), by ski, kayak, 4×4 and on board his ice-breaking sailboat Pangaea. For this new challenge, he has set himself 2 years and should be back in Monaco in 2018.

Leaving on May 8, 2016 aboard his 35-meter sailboat, he plans to reach Namibia and cross the Namib, the oldest desert in the world, in a 4X4. He will then reach the Okavango Delta in Botswana, the largest inland delta in the world, and then Cape Town, South Africa

From Cape Town, he will head for Antarctica, which he will cross on skis (sometimes helped by a kite), pulling a 200 kg sled. This 5800 km journey will lead him through 4900 m high mountains.

Once again, the adventurer will join his aluminum sailboat to cross the Pacific from North to South and explore Oceania. He will stop in some regions of New Zealand and Australia. He will also cross equatorial forests in Papua and New Guinea. In Asia, he will carry out a new land expedition across the tundra of Kamchatka and will reach the North Pole. He will reach Greenland by ski and kayak, from where he will return to his sailboat to return to Monaco.

"I'm almost 50 years old. That doesn't mean you can't do anything anymore! It's an expedition that's probably a little ambitious, but I've often lived outside my comfort zone." explains Mike Horn.

A sailboat transformed into a research platform

As Mike Horn makes his solo passages through the Arctic and Antarctic, the boat will be moved each time to meet the explorer. The 110-foot sailboat will serve as a platform for research, education and auxiliary explorations for other world-class adventurers and athletes in rarely explored regions of the world.

Permanent communication

Mike Horn will relay his expedition on his website with videos, images, and via social networks. Pangaea is equipped with the latest electronics, including a satellite link to communicate in real time around the world
