Corrosion: an underestimated risk
While the phenomenon of electrolysis is well known, it is often considered inevitable by boaters. Instead of looking for the cause, we prefer to change the anodes. Insurance companies exclude the phenomenon from their coverage because it is considered too risky. However, submerged metal equipment, such as sail-drives, pods, telescopic keels and even the entire hull, represent an important budget in the event of premature ageing.
A simple system
The Galvatest yachting kit allows a quick diagnosis, without any in-depth technical knowledge. The electrolysis phenomenon is evaluated by measuring and detecting leakage currents using a submerged probe. Once the metal: steel or aluminium has been selected, an LED box indicates the level of protection.
- Green: correct protection
- Yellow: Overprotection, risk of coating degradation, hydrogen release from aluminium, proliferation of barnacles
- Red: Under protection, corrosion of metal parts
Suitable for monitoring, not analysis
The company Galvatest, distributes its products online to professionals and yachtsmen. The LED yachting version is intended for owners, for a regular check of cathodic protection. In the event of rapid deterioration, the company advises to use the professionals for whom it has developed a product allowing a more precise analysis. As Mr. Grand, founder of the company, says, "It's like a medical thermometer, precision and analysis are adapted to the user."
High rate
If the product is interesting because of its simplicity of use, the price remains high compared to the use of a simple multimeter.
