A shipwreck transformed into an ephemeral underwater museum

Underwater exhibition © Andreas Franke

The photographer Andreas Franke is passionate about scuba diving and chose a wreck in the Keys archipelago to exhibit his pictures.

The Keys Archipelago in Florida (United States) is home to a curious underwater exhibition. Photographer and diving enthusiast Andreas Franke is currently exhibiting a dozen pictures underwater. Protected by plexiglass and framed in stainless steel and silicone, the photos are hung on the wreck of a boat. The Vanderberg is a former US Navy ship from the Second World War, which was voluntarily sunk in 2009 to become the second largest artificial reef in the world. Now it lies 27 metres deep, 30 miles off the Keys. The exhibition will last 4 months.

This series of shots - which requires bottles and diving equipment - belongs to the Sinking World collection presented in 2010 and represents scenes of daily life: dancers demonstrating on deck, children running on deck among fish waving a butterfly net... A way to plunge viewers into a world of illusions as the photographer explains.
