Quatix 3, the on-board electronics concentrated in a Garmin watch

The connected watch is coming on board our boats. After the success of the Quatix, Garmin is back with a new model, the Quatix 3, which with its color screen and its functionalities takes an even more important place in the onboard electronics.

The Quatix is dead, long live the Quatix! Garmin has just launched the new Quatix at the 2016 Düsseldorf boat show: the Quatix 3. As with the first model, this watch takes all the features of the Fenix (the model intended for outdoor use) to add nautical functions.

The Quatix 3 is a true connected watch, a smartwatch in the language of geeks. This model can be connected according to 3 protocols.

  • The ANT which is a kind of proprietary Bluetooth (it is coded) allows it to connect sensors such as a thermometer, a heart sensor, or even for cyclists a frequency sensor. At sea, we will probably use this connection rather little.
  • Wifi will be used to display on the watch all the information circulating on the NMEA 2000 network on board (speed, heading, depth, wind...).
  • Bluetooth allows connection with a smartphone to link the watch to the Internet. Thus, weather or tide data can be displayed. In addition, through this Bluetooth, the watch becomes a remote screen of the smartphone and display messages or other alerts on your wrist.

With its GPS/GLONASS, altimeter/barometer, and 3-axis electronic compass, the Quatix 3 becomes a true recorder of your activities. Thus, during your paddle, kayak or rowing trip, the watch measures the number of strokes, the rowing speed, the distance per stroke to determine the efficiency of the movement.

Displaying information from the NMEA 2000 network

In terms of the specific navigation function, this watch contributes to safety with direct access to the MOB (Man Overboard) function. A single long press of the button and the watch indicates the distance and heading to return to that position.

In addition, this watch is equipped with a mooring alarm with an alert if your boat is slipping.

Regatta Functions

Racers will appreciate the virtual start line indicator, programmable countdown timer for race starts, tacking aid, speed, distance and time to the start line.

Fishing functions

Other functions that we think are more gadgets, such as the anchor chain length calculator for depth or for anglers, a programmable countdown timer for contests and a catch counter to allow the angler to concentrate on his line.

Tide display

While the watch is capable of displaying a great deal of information, it should be noted that unlike the Quatix, this new model can no longer take control of the autopilot. This watch cannot be used as a pilot remote control.

Weather display

On the construction side, the aluminium case and the curved sapphire crystal (unbreakable) show Garmin's desire to offer a top-of-the-range product. This model is water-resistant to 100 m. It is delivered with 2 straps: one black (leather) and one blue (silicone).

The Quatix 3 has an autonomy of up to 20 hours in GPS mode, 50 hours in UltraTrac mode and six weeks in watch mode (depending on the settings).

Time page skin

Open to the developer via the connect IQ platform, it is possible to customize the watch either by downloading free content or by developing your own widgets. There is already the possibility to control your Fusion radio, or to customize the clock with a pirate flag. The color screen lends itself well to this game.
