A compass for sailing

With its renewal of the Olympic range, Plastimo shows that there is still room for innovation in the field of road compasses.

For more than 50 years, Plastimo has been the world leader in the manufacture of compasses. These small precision jewels have always been manufactured with the care of a goldsmith in their workshops in Lorient.

The operation of a compass is immutable. The magnetic needle is attracted by the earth's magnetism. It indicates the North (a magnetic North that is slightly offset from the geographical North). How then to innovate in a field where everything seems fixed? By offering us a new version of the Olympic 100, Plastimo shows us that we can always improve these products.

This new flat deck compass for sailboats has a rose on a sapphire (its hardness ensures longevity and precision by offering the minimum friction). A system to absorb vibrations also makes it easier to read in rough seas. Completely waterproof, the compass has a membrane system to absorb the volume vibrations of the liquid due to temperature and pressure. This same liquid must be perfectly transparent and ensure magnification for a better readability of the rose. These are all perfectly controlled and controlled points that allow Plastimo to offer a 5-year warranty on all its models.

The Olympic 100 (the rose has a diameter of 100 mm) will be placed on the deck of a sailboat or on the shaft of a wheel steering. It is available with a conical or flat rose. The conical rose allows a reading on the front face while the flat rose will be read from above. This compass has universal balancing: it works, regardless of the navigation area on all points of the globe. In addition, its very large amplitude allows it to support the heel of the boat.

The lighting has also been completely revised. Unlike the old models with the bulb installed outside, offering lateral lighting, the Olympic 100 integrates LED lighting with the diode installed in the centre of the compass, for lighting diffused throughout the rose. An LED is also much less energy consuming than a light bulb.
