Marin-Marie, not just a painter, above all a sailor.

A story by Marin published by Orep

Known as the great official painter of the Navy, Marin-Marie also had many other lives. These are recounted in a book built from the painter's archives.

Marin-Marie (1901-1987) was also an archivist. He kept many documents throughout his life. It is these funds which were entrusted by its inheritance to the Archives départementales de la Manche, in 2010. Nearly 1500 documents, 19 m of archive linen, articles, sketches, notes... of which it took the archivists 2 years to classify and index them.

The fruit of this work is an exhibition inaugurated on July 3 and open to the public until October 30, 2015 (at the departmental archives of Manche, 103, rue Maréchal-Juin, in Saint-Lô. Free admission, Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm. Tel. 02????.).

On the fringe of this exhibition, a book was published entitled "Une histoire de Marin. Archives et souvenirs de Marin-Marie". A book in which we discover that the painter lived several lives, lives that are declined by chapters in this beautiful book Discover the book when ordering .

Thus Marin-Marie comes from a family of sailors. His father already sailed and his mother painted. A family from the English Channel to whom Marin-Marie, despite his many travels, has always remained very attached (to the Chausey Islands and Saint-Hilaire du Harcouet, his two base camps). This man is above all a man of the sea. He experienced the transition from yachting to yachting - not with great pleasure as he remembers to say! But it is also a solo sailor with 2 Atlantic crossings (one sailing from east to west) and a second engine (from the United States to France). For the latter, he developed an autopilot, windvane steering. Finally, Marin-Marie was a writer, a man of the world, capable of telling stories orally and in writing with surprising verve.

It is all these moments of life that are recounted in this work decorated with numerous sketches, paintings and photos. Written by the archivists of the Archives Départementale de la Manche, the texts are full of references and explanations that sometimes disturb the reading a little. But this book, so rich, can be read in one go or drawn from it, to pick at it, attracted by a title or an image. The story of this endearing man whose hero could come straight from the imagination of a writer so rich and eventful it was.
