The Belem, come sail there!

Every year, from April to October, the Belem organises introductory sailing trips on a 19th century tall ship.

This school ship is open to all, and offers introductory courses to discover sailing aboard a legendary 19th century sailing ship ème century.

Every year, from April to October, 16 professional sailors welcome you aboard the Belem for sailing trips of 3 to 8 days along the French and European coasts. This voyage is open to all: young and old, initiated or novice.

Embark on the Belem and discover the navigation and life of sailors in the 19th century ème on board a tall ship, but in a safe environment. In groups of 48, you'll help maintain the Belem, and learn the specific maneuvers of a three-masted French square-rigged lighthouse. You'll learn to recognize the 22 sails, pull on the ropes, maneuver the rigging, steer at the helm, and use traditional and modern navigation instruments.

Everyone pitches in, and participants take it in turns, day and night, to man all the ship's workstations, under the benevolent gaze of the crew. Periods of rest and instruction round off your stay. The captain will introduce you to the ship and tell you about its history, the crew will explain the rigging, detail a maneuver... Sea outings aboard a zodiac, practical exercises, an anchorage, a walk around the mast to tighten the sails, route plotting on a nautical chart can also be added to your navigation.

Each trip is unique and determined by the captain according to weather conditions.

Good to know

Sailing on the Belem is permitted from the age of 16, or from 14 with an accompanying adult. No maritime skills are required, but a medical certificate authorizing you to sail is required. This will be provided by the Belem Foundation when you make your reservation.

The average cost is ?170 per day, including an introduction to navigation, meals and accommodation.

Registration is online at belem site and is chosen according to departure and arrival points, duration and price.
