Half of the workforce affected
On Monday 17 November, during a works council meeting, management informed all STX Lanester employees (near Lorient) of a redundancy plan. 47 positions would be affected by this redundancy plan, or half of the shipyard's workforce, which employs 97 people. This information was confirmed by the company secretary Abdelkrim Ahil (CGT) who also told AFP that " This project must be the subject of a meeting of the EC on Monday ."
This decision has left the staff representatives shocked, as they did not expect such a decision. Indeed, even if activity has been slow for several years, in their eyes nothing justifies the elimination of half the workforce. Instead, there was talk of partial unemployment or relocation to Saint-Nazaire. The CGT of STX Lorient expresses its anger " Dividing the workforce of STX Lorient by 2 is tantamount to signing the short-term death warrant of the Rohu shipyard!"
The management of STX France has not let anything slip and will speak at the extraordinary works council on November 24. The CEO Laurent Castaing should detail the social plan. According to the employees of STX Lanester, it would be to announce the sale of the site.
An activity dedicated to the construction of ship hulls
The CGT also explains that the management of the Lorient shipyard would like to specialize in ship hulls, which would mean keeping only the metal hull staff and some supervisors.
