Route du Rhum 2014 - Loïck Peyron could beat Lionel Lemonchois' record

Loïck Peyron is now only 1,000 miles from Guadeloupe and is entering the home stretch of the race. After a final gybe on Friday evening, he should have no more maneuvers to perform.

Peyron in good position for victory

La Tête à l'Anglais is now only 1,000 miles from the fleet leader and now that he is sailing in slightly more established and better oriented trade winds, he just has to follow the straight line to the finish. He made his last gybe at around 7:30 pm on Friday and is now heading straight for Guadeloupe. Given his situation and the route to be covered, he has all the cards in hand to do better than Lionel Lemonchois, who currently holds the reference time: 7 days and 17 hours.

But the ideal is not always realized since Yann Guichard ( ) is only 163 miles from Maxi Solo Banque Populaire VII that is eight hours behind. Knowing that an Ultime can reach speeds of 30 knots and that it will have to go around Butterfly Island and that the wind may then collapse, anything can still happen. Loïkc Peyron must remain concentrated and give it his all to win.

A trio that becomes a duo in the Imoca class

In the Imoca class, the leading trio is no longer together since Marc Guillemot ( Safran ) is experiencing technical problems. It is therefore François Gabart and Jeremie Beyou who are leading a straight line duel towards the finish. In the Multi50s, the leading duo, Erwan Le Roux ( FenêtréA Cardinal ) and Lalou Roucayrol ( Arkema Aquitaine Region ) are sailing in the same conditions: a Northeast to East wind with 12 to 18 knots of squalls.

Two leaders and a dismasting

In the Class40 class, Kito de Pavant ( Otio-Bastide Medical ) managed to regain the lead by negotiating a few gybes that allowed him to catch up with Thibaut Vauchel-Camus ( Solidaires en Peloton ). The weather conditions are not good and the fleet should not meet the trade winds for another two days. Conrad Humphreys ( Cat Phones ) dismasted on Friday evening and is heading for Lisbon.

Anne Caseneuve ( Aneo ) is not taking part in the Rhum Class and is inviting the Class40 to the North of Madeira in order to catch up with the leader of the ranking, Andrea Mura (Vento di Sardegna).
