Starlink has been installed on many cruising sailboats with a fairly simple promise: to provide a connection?during port calls, at anchor, and under certain conditions at sea?that?s close to what?s available on land. Starting in July and August 2026, the situation will change for sailors who leave their country or region of registration for an extended period. The question is no longer just whether the antenna gets a signal out at sea. Now, you?ll need to consider the schedule, the sailing area, the data allowance, and the price of the plan.
Roam Unlimited is now limited to 30 days abroad
The main change concerns the length of time that Roam Unlimited can be used outside the subscriber?s home region. The new rule applies to new subscribers as of July 14, 2026, and to existing contracts as of August 17, 2026. Use outside the registered country or region is now limited to 30 consecutive days. The previous limit was 60 days per stay abroad.
For a relatively short summer cruise, this constraint is fairly easy to work into the itinerary. It becomes much more problematic for a crew that?s been away for several months.
Let?s take the example of a sailboat leaving Europe for the Caribbean before continuing on to Panama and then the Pacific. Returning periodically to the country of registration obviously makes no nautical sense. And regularly changing the country associated with the account adds an administrative burden to a schedule already dictated by weather windows, entry formalities, and technical stops.
Starlink offers several options when the limit is reached: returning the antenna to its country of origin, changing the service plan, or transferring the account to the country where the equipment is being used. This last option is subject to certain time frames and also depends on pricing, service availability, and local regulations.
The demise of Global Roam directly impacts the luxury cruise industry
The second change is the discontinuation of Global Roam, effective for existing customers as of August 17, 2026. This plan was well-suited to a characteristic of offshore sailing: a boat may cross into another country without necessarily returning to its point of departure for months or even years.
Its disappearance therefore creates a gap between short-term roaming services and offerings designed for broader international connectivity.
For a long-haul crew, the challenge lies less in the technical aspects than in the predictability of the service. A properly installed router, antenna, and power supply can remain unchanged. It is the usage rights associated with the account that change.
A new requirement has been added to this process. Starlink is once again requiring a ?Travel Registration? for certain international uses. The registration may require personal information, a form of identification, and a live photo. It does not allow you to bypass the 30-day limit.
"Roam Unlimited" does not mean unlimited Internet in the middle of the Atlantic
The name of the plan can be confusing when viewed from the cockpit of a sailboat. Roam Unlimited is primarily intended for mobile use, and the conditions vary between land, coastal waters, and the open sea. According to reports, usage in coastal waters is permitted up to 12 nautical miles offshore. Beyond that, access requires ?Ocean Mode,? when available with the plan you?re using. Data used may then be billed as an additional charge.
In other words, paying for Roam Unlimited does not mean you?ll have unlimited broadband access during a transatlantic flight.
It is also important to distinguish between data volume and network priority. Roam connections have a lower priority than those under Priority plans when the network is busy. Data speeds may therefore vary.
For the network, this distinction matters. Downloading weather files, receiving emails, or making a call doesn't put as much strain on the connection as streaming, a long video conference, or multiple devices updating simultaneously.
And on a boat, gigabytes are only part of the equation. The antenna and router consume electricity. Their continuous use must therefore be factored into the energy balance, just like the autopilot, the watermaker, or the instruments.
From 95 to 241 euros a month?the budget takes on a whole new dimension
The new pricing structure requires a close look at the cost of a plan over several months. In France, Roam Unlimited is priced at 95 euros per month. Global Priority 50 GB is advertised at 241 euros per month. The difference is therefore 146 euros per month, or 1,752 euros over a full year.
And the two plans do not offer the same service. Global Priority 50 GB has a data cap, while Roam Unlimited is subject to the new international usage restrictions.
For a crew that works remotely from their boat, regularly downloads weather files, and uses the Internet daily, the first step is to measure their actual data usage. A 50 GB plan may be sufficient for certain uses but can quickly become inadequate when several people use the connection just as they would on land.
The cost of the equipment must also be added. The information provided mentions plans starting at 199 euros in certain regions of Germany and an equipment fee of 349 euros associated with a Global Priority plan. The amount therefore depends on the plan available at the time of sign-up.
This is an important point: Starlink rates are subject to change and vary by location. A boater preparing to set sail should check the terms and conditions that apply to their account and country rather than basing their budget on an outdated rate schedule.
Standby mode is a backup, not a full onboard connection
To reduce costs when high-speed internet isn't essential, Starlink also has a standby mode.
According to information cited by the Mobile Internet Resource Center, the price is $10 per month, with a speed of around 500 kbit/s. This low-speed connection allows users to maintain basic communication and then reactivate the service.
On board, however, a 500 kbit/s connection requires you to change your habits. Simple emails and certain light uses are still feasible. Large weather files, software updates, videoconferencing, and streaming are much less suitable.
One question remains: based on the information provided, it is not possible to determine with certainty whether the days spent on standby abroad are counted toward the new 30-day period.
It would therefore be unwise to design a navigation program based on alternating between standby and Roam modes, assuming that this action resets the counter to zero.
Starlink should not become the only means of communication on board
The ease of Internet access can lead people to overlook a crucial distinction: a broadband connection is not a standalone emergency device. Starlink is used for routine communications, weather reports, planning stopovers, and?for some crews?remote work. However, a power outage, a hardware issue, an account restriction, or network unavailability can cut off this access. A sailboat engaged in offshore navigation must therefore maintain independent communication and safety measures appropriate for its itinerary. This redundancy becomes even more important when the commercial terms of the primary service change during the trip.
