The growing risk of lithium-ion batteries at sea
With the widespread use of lithium-ion batteries on pleasure craft and professional vessels, the risk of fire linked to these accumulators continues to grow. These batteries, built into both electrical tenders and on-board equipment, can catch fire following an impact, overcharging or manufacturing defect. Their distinctive feature is that they retain heat in the core of the cell, encouraging a thermal runaway that is difficult to control.
Fireblock gel, a specific response to battery fires

Developed by Fireblock, the new Lithium extinguisher uses an odorless, biodegradable gel composed of potassium polyacrylate, montmorillonite and quartz. When sprayed, this gel coats the burning battery with a thick layer, immediately stopping thermal runaway. Unlike water, which merely slows combustion, this process reduces the temperature within seconds, preventing the flames from re-igniting.
Ecological and operational benefits

In addition to its immediate effectiveness, Fireblock gel has the advantage of generating no toxic vapours. Washable with water and biodegradable, it limits the air and soil pollution that usually accompanies battery combustion. The use of this gel also reduces the amount of water needed to cool a burning battery, while preserving surrounding equipment and structures.
A response to on-board safety needs

On board, there are many sources of risk: batteries for electric motors, power packs for underwater scooters, portable equipment and tools. The Fireblock Lithium fire extinguisher is designed to provide a rapid first line of protection, containing the fire before it spreads to the rest of the vessel. Fireblock has also collaborated with Servaux to integrate this technology into the safety of specific equipment, such as the Smart charger for Seabob scooter batteries.
Different capacities to suit different uses

Available in 900-milliliter, 2-liter, 6-liter and 9-liter versions, the Fireblock Lithium extinguisher is available from Servaux branches in Le Havre, Marseille, Saint-Tropez, Cannes and Monaco. This variety of volumes means they can be fitted on small pleasure craft as well as yachts and professional vessels.
