An atypical concept for an ocean race
The Mini Globe Race (MGR) stands out from the major ocean races for its minimalist approach. Unlike the Vendée Globe, where 18-meter (60-foot) monohulls rule the competition, the MGR requires the use of marine plywood sailboats, self-built according to the plans of the ALMA Globe 580 model. Designed by Australian adventurer Don McIntyre, this class of boats aims to make offshore sailing accessible to passionate amateurs.
A demanding course
The skippers will have to complete a round-the-world voyage in several stages: from Antigua to Panama, then a crossing of the Pacific with stopovers in Australia and South Africa before reaching Brazil and returning to the Caribbean. The 24,000-nautical-mile voyage is unassisted, putting the sailors' resilience to the test, and is scheduled to last around 13 months.
Diverse profiles, a shared passion
The entrants include a wide range of nationalities and sailing backgrounds. The race features 15 participants, including 2 women, from 8 countries: Australia, United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, Ireland, Spain, Switzerland and the United States. Notably, there are no French sailors on the starting line.
John Blenkinsop, for example, built two ALMA Globe 580s, one for himself and one for his father, becoming the first father-son duo to attempt a solo circumnavigation in the same race. Pilar Pasanau, an experienced Spanish Mini 650 sailor, overcame financial difficulties to be at the start.
A colorful start
On February 23, 2025, under blue skies and winds of 15 to 25 knots, the fleet set off from Falmouth Harbour, Antigua in the West Indies, a region unaccustomed to hosting round-the-world race starts. Spectators lining the beach were treated to an unusual sight: tiny sailboats sailing among the behemoths of the yachting world. A historic start to an extraordinary race.

Beyond the competition, the Mini Globe Race is based on the idea that adventure takes precedence over pure performance. These sailors, far from the big sponsored teams, demonstrate that ocean sailing remains an accessible dream for those ready to take the plunge.
