Aire-sur-la-Lys (59) marina: immediate success and a waiting list in its first year

One year after the arrival of its first boat, the Aire-sur-la-Lys marina (Nord department) is already a victim of its own success. With full capacity and an ever-growing waiting list, this new facility is proving to be a driving force for river tourism and an asset for the region.

A successful first year

Since welcoming its first boat in December 2023, the Aire-sur-la-Lys marina has been busy. Situated between the River Lys and the Neufossé canal, the marina has quickly won over French and international yachtsmen alike. In just one year, all available berths have been filled, and a waiting list has had to be set up to meet the growing demand.

A milestone inauguration

Officially inaugurated on May 17, 2024, this brand-new harbor cost 5.3 million euros and is part of a strategy to develop river tourism in Flanders and Artois. Fully equipped with video surveillance, yachtsmen benefit from brand-new infrastructures, including a dedicated harbor master's office, 24-hour access to sanitary facilities, a wifi network and a gray water and bilge pumping service available free of charge within the harbor.

An asset for the region

Aire-sur-la-Lys, with its 23 historic monuments and rich commercial past, now boasts a marina that attracts boaters and tourists alike. Close to major cities such as Lille, Calais and Arras, this infrastructure enhances the attractiveness of the region for visitors seeking cultural discoveries and navigation on its waterways.

The challenges and opportunities of river tourism

The port highlights the region's under-exploited potential for river tourism. By offering a modern, welcoming base, it helps to diversify the tourist offering while boosting the local economy. However, its rapid success also poses challenges, such as managing growing demand and the possible expansion of its capacity.
