November 10, 2024 marks the start of the Vendée Globe from the bay of Les Sables d'Olonne. To ensure the safety of skippers and yachtsmen, the Préfecture Maritime has issued a decree specifying the instructions to be followed on this day (see link at foot of article). Speed limits, zones reserved for yachtsmen and a VHF communication system will be in place. Amateur yachtsmen are advised to be extremely vigilant.
Navigation regulations for pleasure boaters
The start of the Vendée Globe brings with it exceptional maritime traffic, requiring strict rules. All yachts present must sail at a speed less than 15 knots , exclusively to the moteu r for better control. In addition, access to the Port Olona marina will be forbidden from 6am to 11:30am, with exit only permitted between 11:30am and 1pm.
Regulated areas according to ship size
To ensure a smooth departure, the Préfecture Maritime is imposing specific positioning requirements for yachtsmen, depending on the size of their vessel. Boats over 7 meters in length will have to stay within the restricted zone, indicated by inflatable buoys, while boats under 7 meters in length will have to sail outside the marked areas. This organization is designed to facilitate the passage of IMOCA boats and avoid the risk of collision.
Safety scenarios based on weather conditions
Three zoning scenarios are planned, depending on wind conditions. Depending on the wind direction (west, south or south-west), the prefecture will adapt the navigation zones to ensure safety. This decision will be announced on November 6, 2024, giving boaters time to prepare accordingly.
Communication on VHF channels 16 and 01
To ensure continuous and effective communication, all vessels present must maintain an active watch on VHF channel 16, and activate their AIS to enable geolocation. Those equipped with a dual watch system are also invited to monitor channel 01, reserved for organization announcements.
Respecting the Natura 2000 zone
As the departure area is located in a Natura 2000 zone, boaters must take extra care not to disturb protected species, which are particularly sensitive to disturbance. This area benefits from special protection, and all yachtsmen are asked to avoid any unnecessary intrusion that could disturb the bay's fragile ecosystem.
