Ecological sails: Elvstrøm Sails' sustainable challenge

Elvstrøm Sails has embarked on a sustainable approach with its EKKO range, using recycled materials to manufacture sails. Find out how this innovation fits into the sailmaker's eco-responsible production process.

Listening to nature!

At Elvstrøm Sails, the environment is a way of life and a state of mind. And with our Danish heritage, it's a natural response. It's not just about the products we bring to market and the materials we use. It's about the resources we use to make our products, such as electricity and heating, the materials we use for packaging, the way we sort and reduce waste in general, and the working environment we create.

Our Elvstrøm Sails production plant in Denmark is entirely powered by clean electricity - the wind - created by onshore wind turbines. And the list of initiatives and possibilities is not limited.

A world first: The EKKO range by Elvstrøm Sails

Since 2020, Elvstrøm Sails has been the first sailmaker in the world to label an EKKO range and manufacture the world's first sail from recycled plastic. The EKKO range is our commitment to listening to nature and responding with a sustainable approach.

The first product in the EKKO range was a taffeta and a polyester fiber for the membrane sails in the EPEX range. Both are recyclable products. We continued our innovations and introduced the first materials made from recycled plastic for our laminated eXRP sails in cooperation with our fabric supplier.

Today, over 80% of our customers choose the EKKO option when it comes to laminated sails. In 2022, we received special recognition from the European Yacht of The Year for our efforts in sustainable development.

Recycled materials

When it comes to the materials used in our products, the EKKO approach is to find and use recycled materials or to use materials that are easily recyclable, perhaps not necessarily in a sail, but in other consumer products. Plastic bottles are a huge threat to life underwater. But they can be recycled and used to make all kinds of new products, including sails.

Ekko, a competitive alternative

Elvstrøm Sails of course offers a range of traditional high-end polyester laminates, but with this new addition of the eXRP Cruise, we are now able to offer boaters a more environmentally-friendly choice, at the same price level as traditional laminates.

" We hope that the fact that you don't really have to consider the price difference for sails made from recycled materials will make the decision to opt for the more sustainable version much easier "explains Flemming Christensen, Head of Research and Development - Elvstrøm Sails.

Carbon footprint

In cooperation with Dansk Industri, we have been involved in calculating our carbon footprint through the so-called "Klimaklar" program. This work is ongoing, enabling us to better understand how and where we can improve our behavior as a company.

Our commitment

Our hobbies and passions are guided by a natural resource: the wind. And with an Elvstrøm sail you make another choice. Your sail is produced using the CO2-neutral energy of the wind.

Our Elvstrøm Sails production plant in Denmark is powered entirely by clean wind-generated electricity from onshore wind turbines. Thanks to "MedVind", we also purchase additional wind power to cover the electricity used by subcontractors outside Denmark. In addition to this, we use climate-friendly heating from wood chips to heat our factory in Denmark.

It's a process and a journey we've now been on for several years. Come on board with us and look for the EKKO label.
