Duracell project: First spray painting in the doghouse

Matt continues to make progress on the many remaining detail layers, and prepares for the many paintings to come by installing a compressor system. A device he inaugurates by painting the interior of the doghouse.

Laminating and preparations

The transformation of Duracell into a cruising sailboat is progressing, but as we all know, the devil is in the detail. Numerous laminations remain to be made, including the connection between the doghouse and the deck on the inside. Matt shows how he ensures a good joint to avoid angles too large for the fiberglass, and reminds us of the essential rules of preparation.

At the same time, Matt is redesigning the changing areas in the aft cabins. The cupboards are inadequate, and Matt decides to duplicate them to add shelving.

Pneumatic paint equipment

In today's second, more content-rich episode, Matt points out that as the project progresses, painting will become increasingly important. With Awlgrip's support, he decided to buy an air compressor. This will enable him to paint with a spray gun rather than a roller. Matt sees several advantages in this: limiting the number of coats, as the spray gun allows him to apply more material, but also applying the paint more evenly.

This is a first for Matt, who detects a few leaks before the installation is fully operational. He then practises a little, before attacking the doghouse and rear cabins with a coat of primer, not without first masking and cleaning everything.

The result is not entirely perfect, but Matt seems satisfied for a first, without any real aesthetic challenge. He'll be able to make progress as Duracell's refit progresses.
