Icom IC-U20SR, a license-free walkie-talkie for on-board use

Japanese communications specialist Icom is launching a new walkie-talkie that will be a welcome addition to any boat. Practical, simple, lightweight and sturdy, it's ideal for all exchanges between several crew members on board.

On boats, walkie-talkies can have multiple uses. They can be used to communicate between the bow and stern of a boat when maneuvering in port or at anchor. They can also be used to communicate between the boat and its tender when going ashore. Although it's common practice to take your portable VHF ashore, it's forbidden to use a VHF on land. For these reasons, the walkie-talkie has its place on board.

Can be used without a license

The latest walkie-talkie from Japanese manufacturer Icom is a license-free handheld device. It features 16 channels for communication between 2 devices. As with VHF, transmissions are free to be heard by all other devices on the same frequency.

Small but strong

On the practical side, this notebook is very small: 10 x 5 cm and weighs just 157 g. Its removable lithium battery provides autonomy of up to 21h. It recharges quickly in 4 hours, either on the cradle supplied with the device, or directly with a USB C cable.

Robust and splash-proof, this IP54-rated handheld will be welcomed on board by all crew members. Available at ?169
