Clean lines
Yacht designer Philippe Briand unveils a new 60-meter ketch concept called Kaze. Comfortable sailing and large volumes below deck are the guidelines of this design. The 3D images show clean and balanced lines underlined by a lowered roof for a modern result. The designer chose a ketch rig instead of a classic sloop to facilitate the comfort and navigation of a 499 gross tonnage yacht.
Philippe Briand was keen to observe two principles in his design. The most important is to create volume for the living spaces, the way a homeowner would enjoy his or her home on land.

Focus on lifestyle
He explains: "The large aft width of the hull not only provides stability, but also allows for an exceptionally large beach club. In fact, it is comparable to many motor yachts, offering a truly luxurious experience on board. The aft bulwarks fold down to form large decks, while a huge platform hidden in the transom extends down to the waterline. Steps built into the platform's hydraulic mechanism help transform these extra spaces into a rich waterside playground."

A hull designed for sailing under sail
The slender hull shape should allow for good sailing even in light winds, without having to use the engine regularly. Under sail, Kaze will also be able to generate its own electricity thanks to an alternator installed in line with the drive shaft that can generate tens of kilowatts day and night. A large battery bank could store excess energy during the day to power the electrical systems on board at anchor.

Technical inputs to validate the concept
Kaze is no longer in the concept stage thanks to the technical input of several experts. Southern Spars advised on the specifications of the three rigging options, which range from classic to high performance. Francesca Muzio of FM architettura designed a timeless interior that fits in perfectly with Briand's exterior lines. And some shipyards are interested in a building partnership.
