Since its launch in 1978, the Route du Rhum has been open to all boats without any size limit. To preserve its origins, the race offers the possibility to amateurs, not so amateurs, to participate in the mythical Transat within the Rhum class. Divided into two since 2018, the Rhum Multi and Rhum Mono, it welcomes all boats that do not fit into any other class or former one-designs now out of the gauge.

Sailboats that don't fit in any of the other classes

The rhum Mono class gathers monohulls of a size less than or equal to 39 feet that have not obtained a certificate of gauge of class40 or IMOCA since 2011. The Rhum Multi category includes multihulls between 35 and 65 feet in size that do not belong to the gauge of Ocean Fifty since 2015. On November 6, 2022, there will be 17 competitors in the Rhum Multi class and 12 in the Rhum Mono class at the start of the Route du Rhum.

If this class is reminiscent of the original spirit of the race, it is because it brings together production boats, prototypes, but also boats that have forged the legend of ocean racing.

Sailing legends and brand new prototypes

In Multi Rum for example, we will find Flo, the former trimaran Pierre 1er, which won Florence Arthaud the Route du Rhum in 1990. Philippe Poupon, who will take the helm for this edition, is one of the great favorites in his category. Alongside him, we will also find Happy and Acapella sisterships of the Olympus Photo of Mike Birch, first winner of the race. These small trimarans are Walter Greene designs. It is aboard Acapella - La Chaîne de l'Espoir that we will find Charlie Capelle, who at 67 years old, will return for his 6th participation and the 7th for his boat. Four ex-Multi50s will also be present: Oren Nataf's Rayon Vert, Fabrice Payen's Ille-et-Vilaine - Cap vers l'inclusion, Erwan Thiboumery's Interaction and David Ducosson's Trilogik - Dys de C?ur from Guadeloupe.

Although open to amateurs, enlightened since they are capable of crossing the Atlantic in rough starting conditions, this class includes many skippers who have made their mark on the history of ocean racing, such as Marc Guillemot, Halvard Mabire or even Roland Jourdain, who will be sailing an Outremer 5X made from flax fibre .

On the side of the Mono Rum we will find the famous Red Cigar renamed for the occasion Formatives ESI Business School for Ocean As Common. It was on this same boat that she did her first Vendée Globe in 1996. Alongside her, we will find Cape to Cape Location of Wilfrid Clerton, ex Kriter VIII of Michel Malinovsky or the former Pen Duick III of Eric Tabarly, now skippered by Arnaud Pennarun from Finistère.

In the Mono class, we will also find the Mediterranean Jean-Pierre Dick, whose the objective is to win this Route du Rhum and is the favorite of the event.
