Squalls on the way to the Mini Transat for Hugo

at the end of the day, Hugo saw his competitors move away to the south. He can only manage the squalls and continue to persevere with this option, which unfortunately will not pay off

Hugo, The Sailing Frenchman shares with us his daily life in the Mini Transat 2021. He is now in the middle of the course between the Canaries and the finish line in Guadeloupe. As expected, his ranking collapses. Indeed, the group of sailors who chose to take the southern route, certainly longer, receive more wind. While our competitor stayed on the northern route and found himself in areas with very little wind. It's comfortable and doesn't tire the equipment, but it doesn't allow us to achieve a good average.

In addition, on the edge of the high, Hugo is dealing with squalls very frequently. This is quite common in this part of the Atlantic Ocean, but requires vigilance not to break any equipment. Especially when we are sailing under the big spinnaker and the wind is more than 30 knots. And let's not forget the rain that also accompanies these squalls. To keep an eye on the squalls (hence the expression), Hugo prefers to sleep in his cockpit for about 15 minutes at a time. He is then ready to react as quickly as possible if the wind increases.

After 10 days of sailing, in the middle of the course, Hugo can estimate his water consumption and allow himself a full shower with a rinse with the surplus of fresh water. A luxury on this kind of racing boat that offers no comfort.
