Icom IC-M510, use your mobile as a remote microphone for your VHF!

Icom has always stood out by launching VHFs with innovative features. We think of the AquaCake function that cleans the speakers when they have received water, or the noise reduction function to clarify the listening. This time Icom announces a function that makes the link between a mobile and a VHF.

To make the link between the Icom IC-M510E and a smartphone, simply load a free application, available under IOS or Android. Once the application is loaded, you connect to the VHF via Wifi. Using either the built-in Wifi on the VHF, or the Wifi on board and in this case the VHF is also connected to this Wifi. We then find on the application of the smartphone, all the functions identical to a remote microphone. I can transmit with the VHF, listen to the exchanges and change functions such as adjusting the squelch or the volume and change the channel.

All the functions of a remote microphone

For example, we'll change channel from channel 8 to channel 7 and we'll see on the VHF screen that it has also changed. Or I adjust the squelch as we could do it directly from the button of the VHF. With the application, I have all the useful functions to adjust my VHF, but especially to send or receive a call even if I am far from the station.

As the application turns my smartphone into a remote microphone, I can make calls via the VHF by pressing the PTT button: "Hello, this is VHF Test, do you receive me?". We see on the portable VHF next to us that we receive the message. In the same way, if a station calls, I will receive the communication on the VHF and on my smartphone: "Message well received 5 out of 5". My phone has become a wireless remote microphone of this VHF Icom IC-M510E.

Your mobile transformed into an intercom

This VHF also offers an Intercom function. This is to establish a discussion between the VHF and the smartphone. For example, if I'm at the front of the boat to drop anchor, I can communicate with the pilot who is at the helm next to the VHF set. I start by alerting him by emitting a sound signal to indicate that I am going to talk and say: "Ready to anchor" and the pilot can answer me "Anchor! I receive his message on my smartphone.

In addition to this innovative wireless connection, this VHF is distinguished by a very bright color screen with a very fine definition and a very wide viewing angle. With a night mode (red light) that avoids too much glare.

The IC-M510E is a DSC VHF (easily distinguishable by the presence of the Ditress button) that is complete and of high quality. It is available in 2 versions: a version without and a version with an integrated AIS receiver.
