Located in the north of the British Virgin Islands (BVI), Anegada, flat and low on the water, seems to want to go unnoticed. However, it conceals many attractions that know how to seduce sailors who love wilderness sites and scuba diving. Visit in pictures and practical advice

Most of the Virgin Islands, in the north of the Caribbean arc, have vegetation-covered reliefs that indicate them from afar. Anegada, on the other hand, can only be discovered at the last moment, after a few hours of sailing from Virgin Gorda or Tortola.

Sunset at Pomato point

After the sun has gone down, Mother Nature offers a gallery of charming and moving pictures, which can be admired from a quiet and wild anchorage. The contours of the leeward islands are drawn with scientific precision against a background of subtle pastels. In the moments before the darkness, the firmament is studded with small black clouds, delicately chiseled in the half-light. They were white a few moments before. The arrival of darkness will have darkened them, without however conferring on them the charge of anxiety and stress which usually characterizes a leaden sky.

Soon, the orange band projected on the horizon by the solar star will fade away and be replaced by the starry sky that will envelop everything. A new enchantment in perspective

Great beaches for walking boaters

A few hours before, rare walkers ploughed with their heavy steps the blond sand of this endless beach which surrounds Anegada. Cautiously, they had initiated this hike in the middle of the afternoon, in order to avoid the heat of the sun at its zenith.

There are many such places around the world. On the beaches of Anegad, you can walk along the coast for hours, with only a few crabs or some birds that feel like they are in a restaurant.

This mode of travel with a leisurely taste is a real therapy. We commune with nature and the elements without any distraction. No filter, no disturbing component comes to pollute this flirtation with the basic beauties that our planet generously offers us.

Then, as dusk approaches, the pace imperceptibly quickens so as not to miss the magic moment of a possible green ray.

Anegada, an island embedded in a huge madreporic plateau

The island was, in the not so distant past, a formidable trap for boats. Also, many of them ended their career prematurely, for the greatest profit of the shipwreckers. This profession was very fashionable at one time. Nowadays, this rich maritime domain still conceals marvels that attract a considerable tourist and pleasure-seeking population, especially in its underwater part.

Generous fauna and flora

The fauna and flora, abundant and diversified, are conducive to the proliferation of all kinds of fish and especially of those delicious antennae bugs that local restaurants serve.

In the interior of the island, brackish water ponds offer shelter to a wide variety of birds, including a beautiful family of pink flamingos.

One can easily rent a scooter or a "mini Moke" to criss-cross the few kilometers of concrete road that give access to all these wonders.

Setting point anchor: a field of word-bodies

To stop at Anegada, various options are available to the yachtsman. The main anchorage at Setting Point is accessed through a marked channel, built in the middle of the coral, up to the large field of buoys that cost thirty dollars per night! However, those who are fond of anchoring can sneak westward, between the limestone spuds, in order to find an area where they can drop their anchor. Be careful, you need to have a good visibility for that.

Or, you can opt for the shelter of Pomato Point, in front of an endless beach of golden sand, in the middle of nature and isolated from everything. A dream come true!
