Between squalls and calms on the 1st stage of the Mini 2021 for The Sailing Frenchman

The first leg of the Mini Transat 2021 was very tricky. Too much or not enough wind are on the program for the racers. Hugo, The Sailing Frenchman, tells us about his daily life on board his Mini 1014.

New start after the gale

We find Hugo in the first stage of the Mini Transat 2021. A stage that connects La Rochelle to the Canaries and where nothing happens as expected. With a strong gale announced, the race direction has decided to advise the sailors to take refuge in ports in Portugal. We meet Hugo when he leaves this forced stopover and starts again from Baïona.

But if the gale had passed, Hugo found himself in a stormy sea with unfortunately too little wind. It's a bit of a double whammy where every time the wind comes back, it is favorable for the front runners and delays the second pack even more.

Enjoy the sea

Hugo films all this with a lot of comments and beautiful images of his boat. Used to directing himself, he manages to make us live, almost minute by minute, this stage which ends up wearing on his nerves.

However, in the face of this counter-performance, Hugo keeps smiling and especially remains contemplative in front of the beauty of the shows that the sea offers him. He shares with us the pleasure of being at sea, marveling at a rainbow or dolphins playing with his bow.
