How to observe marine mammals from your boat?

What could be more wonderful than to sail on a cruise accompanied by marine mammals? However, certain precautions must be taken for your safety and that of the animals.

Often when we sail, we come across marine mammals: dolphins, pilot whales and even whales in some waters of the planet. If some of them come close to the hull of our boat, for our greatest joy, others are not so playful. We then feel like joining them to try to attract their attention.

Defined observation areas

However, certain rules must be respected for the animal's well-being. The GECC (association for the preservation of marine mammals at sea) has defined several zones for the observation of animals, valid in particular from the tip of Saint-Brieuc to the Bay of Seine, but also in the French West Indies, in Spanish waters and therefore applicable in a logic of common sense in all seas and oceans.

Approach zone (> 500 m). area in which animals are likely to be found: potential resting, feeding, breeding area

Caution zone (500-100 m) distance perimeter around the nearest animal.

No access zone (100 m) A 100 m perimeter around the nearest animal, which no vessel should enter. Within this perimeter, approaching or observing an animal will irreparably affect its behavior. Such disturbance is prohibited by law.

Reduce the pace

If you want to approach a group of animals, be sure to maintain a safe distance. Reduce your speed to about 4 knots and steer from behind at a 30° angle. While observing, maintain a parallel course, with no sudden movements or changes in direction.

Some tips to apply

  • Keep the noise to a minimum
  • Do not touch the animals and do not dive next to them, they are still wild animals and could unintentionally hurt you
  • Do not throw food, drinks or other waste overboard
  • Do not separate them
  • Do not prevent them from moving freely
  • Choose a maximum contact time of 15 minutes.
